feeling : Spotify showcased its redesigned roving app in early March and the update has now tramp out to my iPhone – upon first mental picture , it seems like a bit of a mess .

WhenSpotify first detailed the update , I ca n’t say I was full of enthusiasm . The TikTok and Instagram - inspired feed of auto - playing music and good word looked right away deadening , while the even greater focus on aspects of the app not connected to music , like audiobooks and podcasts , was arguably the opposite of what drew me to Spotify in the first berth .

Still , I was willing to give it a go and prove it out , considering Spotify has pretty much been my sole style of waste medicine since it launched in the UK all the fashion back in 2009 .

After a couple of days of using the update app though , my initial fright have almost all come dependable . The auto - playacting , social - net wannabe rest home provender is a mess .

Like Instagram or TikTok , the updated Home division of the Spotify app is now a scrolling feed of content you could unendingly ( and aimlessly ) flip through . Instead of static art , there are now more interactional component , living nontextual matter and auto - playing music as you scroll down , and everything from recommended album to play list gets thrown into the mixture .

While it sure feels more alive than before , it ’s also so much harder to quick obtain something to listen to . Whereas before you might have seen 5 - 10 albums or playlists at a glance , you now only see one matter . That means it could take 10 swipe to see what you would have antecedently see outright .

There also seems to be far less of a focus on playlists in the rejigged homescreen , with album rather taking priority . Most of the record album Spotify has been showing me here since my app updated have been ones I ’ve latterly listen to , rather than highlighting recommendation I might prefer . I used to get laid how each Clarence Shepard Day Jr. the Spotify app would throw up a load of playlist suggestions as soon as I opened up the app and I could be listening to something within second – that ’s no longer the vitrine .

I also ca n’t stand that as you scroll through this feed , thing at random autoplay with the sound blaring out . you may mute them by penetrate the minuscule sound icon but the app does n’t seem to commend that input for too foresightful and a few hour later on , it ’s back at full blast .

I might be in the minority here , but I also really dislike how Spotify is incite aside from focusing on medicine . Podcasts and audiobooks are now make deeper into the app than before , with random sections of podcasts I do n’t sign to playing as I scroll . There ’s more autoplaying if you come in the dedicated Audiobook and Podcasts section and it seems that everywhere I tap in this update app causes something else to autoplay unexpectedly .

There ’s also absolutely no way to remove cite of podcasts and audiobooks . I listen to hour of both every hebdomad – just through far superior apps and services – but have none of either in my Spotify subroutine library and it still tries to force them on me . What makes the post worse is that you ca n’t even buy audiobooks through the app – it just tells you to go off to the Spotify website to buy anything that catches your attention . The user experience is horrendous .

liken to Apple ’s approach where podcasts , books and medicine are all separated into very distinct apps you may easily brush aside , this single - app method that Spotify now use is just too officious .

Just like my colleague Kob , I am not one of those people constantly bewail Spotifyfor its lack of movement on its longsighted - awaitedHi - Fi tierand I can somewhat translate why it has take inspiration from other apps for this update . TikTok ’s provender is ridiculously democratic and very habit-forming , but it just does n’t work in an app where I want to be interacting with it for the inadequate amount of time possible .

My bragging dashing hopes is really in myself . I know that I am not rifle to cancel Spotify and move across to a rival Robert William Service like Apple Music or Tidal . I ’ve used Spotify for too long , it screw my tastes too well and I think the playlist it offers are the best in the business concern . I also still love its constantly updating live play list , like On Repeat and Time Capsule , and have yet to see these replicated well elsewhere .

Instead , I know I will stick with Spotify and bemoan this frightful redesign each time I apply it .
