Verdict
The TCL 40R 5 GB is a mid - range equipment doing its good to offer more than most at the £ 199/$220 price range – and it succeeds in many ways . It looks undecomposed , public presentation is substantial , and the battery life is n’t bad , either . Its bare photographic camera apparatus leave some to be desired for anyone looking for a secure choice and I ’d have like an OLED display , but it ’s definitely one of the best cheap sound we ’ve tested in recent months – and offers that all - important 5 K connectivity if you need it , too .

Introduction
It feel like we ’ve finally got past the region ofbudget 5 G phonesjettisoning much of what makes them good workhorses for improved connectivity .
For a honest while , it felt like a sub-£300/$300 gadget that wanted to proffer 5 G had to sell its person for the privilege . The result was 5 chiliad handsets with compromised internals and displays , that would cost the same as a more subject mid - range phone .
manufacturer have get down to come up a good proportionality , though , and it gives models like the TCL 40R 5 yard – as well as the cheaperTCL 40 SE – a great hazard to shine .
bid a headphone with solid carrying out and barrage spirit at just £ 199/$220 , with 5 thousand and a nice blueprint , would ’ve felt a little like witchcraft a year or two ago , but it works and works well .
Naturally , some corner have to be switch off , but for this price it feels churlish to quetch about a higher resolution display or better cameras when what you ’re getting otherwise is price for perfection .
The TCL 40R 5 gravitational constant is out now in Europe , with other regions to follow afterwards in 2023 . It starts at £ 199.99/$219 for the 64 GB version , with a 128 GB version on the way – although no pricing has been disclosed yet .
Design and screen
The TCL 40R 5 gram is a good - reckon twist , and feel great , too , thanks to a lightly textured back jury . My review unit is the Stardust Black choice , but it also comes in Stardust Purple .
But while the overall design looks and feels great , we ’re kicking things off with the negatively charged I mentioned in the presentation – the display .
While there ’s still a lot to like with the 6.6 - inch LCD show , its 1612 x 720 “ HD+ ” resolution feels lacklustre by any metric . apart from the keenness , it ’s not especially bright , either , with 400 nit max .
On the plus side , it does offer up to90Hzfor its refresh rate , which emphatically makes play and scrolling sense smoother . TCL does extend an option to advance coloring material , dividing line and sharpness in image , and the option to bend that on is found during the frame-up process . I found the conflict fairly trifling , though .
There ’s a “ brim ” at the bottom of the screen and a central notch at the top , the latter of which houses an 8MP sensing element . The right side has a volume rock ‘n’ roll musician , and a Sleep / Wake button that doubles as a fingerprint sensor – although you could use the basic Face Unlock , too .
The left side has a SIM tray , and charging through the bottom sharpness is through USB - C – there ’s no tuner level to be institute here , rather unsurprisingly .
Cameras
The rear of the TCL 40R 5 G has a ternion of cameras within its rectangular mental faculty , but I ’m sorry to cover only one of them is really deserving using .
That eminence go to the elemental 50MP photographic camera , which , while unspectacular , at least offers the form of clarity not institute on the 2MP depth or macro cameras .
As you may see in my picture of Batman , the Dark Knight is detail enough , but the Stream Deck clitoris next to him are more than a footling lave out . The anime figure ’s colouring material fare similarly , but there ’s still detail in its cheek and turnout .
The 2MP macro lens , on the other hand , works fairly well when zoomed on the D20 in interior status , but struggle in rude light as it drops some of the detail from the shot .
Video gaining control is capped at 1080p , which perhaps is n’t too surprising ease up the sub-1080p exhibit on offer here , although 30FPS is a little disappointing .
The 8MP front tv camera fares a little best , but it does automatically enable a beautification feature which necessitate to be switched off in the menu . Whether that ’s on or off , it has some trouble distinguishing moody fuzz from a dark background – as realize in my examples .
Performance
The TCL 40R 5 G ’s big strength , as I ’ve been alluding to , is its performance . The MediaTek Dimensity 700 and keep company 4 GB of RAM wo n’t beatflagship devices , of course , but for under £ 250 it ’ll give them its best dead reckoning .
Flicking through Android 12 was responsive , help by that 90Hz refresh rate , but I was impressed by how much gaming I could get done on the gadget – especially when the slenderly cheaper TCL 40 SE skin with gaming so much .
I spent some time in a middling mid - level deed of conveyance ( when it comes to requiring GPU grunt ) in League of Legends : Wild Rift , and enjoyed a few peer with consistent frame rates , although I expect the lower 720p resolution helped .
More graphically demanding games , however , such as the like of Genshin Impact , saw noticeable stutter . It ’s still just about playable , but again , it ’s not going to be passing fluid or responsive .
While you may connect Bluetooth earbuds , or even make use of the 3.5 mm earphone jack , the TCL 40R 5 K does have a punchy mono loudspeaker system at the base . I was impressed by how loud it can get , but also how balanced it is – even with a mono output .
Some equipment be given to offer a cluttered soundstage where mids , trebles and bass all get swallowed by each other , but TCL ’s is impressively clean-cut here , at least for euphony and telecasting shows . plot can be a little too bombastic , however .
As has been an unfortunate case with TCL in years by , there are a fair few pieces of bloatware to uninstall . When perform a fresh install , there were multiple third - party games to remove , as well as TCL ’s own apps . It ’s not a dealbreaker , but it still feels a little inconvenient when buying a Modern twist .
On the flip side , TCL ’s Android sheathing , TCL UI 4.0 ( based onAndroid 12 ) is impressively breezy , changing very slight about Google ’s mobile OS . It ’s pretty close to the stock Android experience , with some additional feature like a sidebar for contacts or even a low ruler , and some additional notification customisation .
I have n’t been able to support how many Android updates we can have a bun in the oven for the TCL 40R 5 G , however , so that ’s something to weigh when bet at the twist ’s longevity .
Battery life
The TCL 40R 5 G has a 5,000 mAh electric battery , which is somewhat sizeable and ensures a full day of utilisation – especially given the lower result and brightness level than more premium options .
course , you may expect battery to drain more rapidly with drawn-out or demanding tasks , but in my experience , I get around a day and a half of more passing consumption .
Running the like of Wild Rift and Genshin Impact certainly worked the internals , though – I saw each take off 20 % in half an hour , think you ’ll require to keep your charger handy . Streaming fared better , with an minute of HDR content on Netflix give birth the same result as 30 minutes of gambling , though it ’s much less efficient than more expensive options .
Sadly , you ’ll probably want an file name extension lead , too . The charging cable in the loge is shortsighted , although it is nice to still get a power adapter here ( it ’s a 15W pick ) .
Charging take around 3 hour from 0 - 100 % , with the first 50 % reached in just under an time of day . It ’s not tight charging , but TCL says profligate charging is supported if you have a higher - wattage adapter .

Should you buy it?
The TCL 40R 5 GB does n’t cut any corners when it come to carrying into action , with tidy sum to see you through the day – whether you ’re punt , scrolling , or watching content .
The chief area where the TCL 40R 5 gee falls shortsighted ( aside from its middling photographic camera ) , is its old - feel LCD display .
Final Thoughts
At this toll point , the TCL 40R 5 gramme does everything you could want it to . It ’s a true workhorse that , while lacking in the flash of a brilliant , sharper display and a stunning camera system , bid enough under the cowling to justify foot it over other 5 G budget options .
It wo n’t outpace your flagship ( far from it ) , but for enterprise purposes , a first phone for a love one , or even just a backup , it ’s tough to say no at this price .
