OPINION : I ’ve get to say that this one impart me a little confused .

Netflix hascancelled(or should that be kancelled ? ) Kaos , and it ’s a decision that make me wonder ( again ) about the state of the stream industry .

A few week back I wrote about the20thanniversary of Lost , and about how the television series of today should ape it – not necessarily the content , but the era of scheduling it live in . But in today ’s Earth , I do n’t suppose a show like Lost would be .

kaos

A 24 - episode season that unfurled on a weekly footing ? That seems like a opulence .

I do n’t thinkNetflixhelps itself with its decision - making . Yes , it ’d depend at the pullulate figures and justify the cancellation of Kaos on those terms . The hearing did n’t produce as much as it wanted in the first 28 sidereal day , viewership declined on a hebdomadal basis etc etc .

Not every show is the same

But not every show is the same . Kaos is not the most outwardly exciting series – it ’s not a thriller , it withdraw its time and tells a level about portion , life , and decease . To me , the history is n’t really finished , it ended – but not in a conclusive way . It now stands as a series that feels incomplete . Knowing there wo n’t be a second series , would I commend it to anyone ? Not really .

Some show are discovered and found , and build up a pursuit over clock time . Netflix swinging the cancellation axe after a season deny witness the opportunity to discover something and get invested into . It also creates a trouble of front - load an audience instead of sustain and building it over clip . It ’s as if Netflix is fuel by explosions that bite bright but do n’t last for very long . It ’s as if it ’s design to be fleeting before moving on to the next hopeful thing .

You look at a series such as obtuse Equus caballus , which has ramp up an consultation and credibility over time . Apple showed religious belief in it and give up the creators to tell a narrative in the manner they wanted to . Netflix seems to solely operate under the formula of the almighty dollar . If a series does not clap peoples ’ eye to a screen straight out , if the audience sheer down slightly instead of upwards in the first 28 days , then that ’s a sign of the zodiac of loser . It ’s short - termism and I do n’t think it works .

kaos

Who knows , Kaos could have become a self-aggrandizing hit once it put down out its story and started to progress in its second series . Often tv set series find more sureness once the solidifying - up is done but we ’ll never know if that was the case with here .

Binging is the issue

Part of the job is the disbursal of these serial . An episode could be as much as two - hour independant movie . Another part is Netflix ’s hesitation to move away from binge - watching . Other streaming services have shy away from throw off all their episodes at once , and while a season drop does provide exemption in how the great unwashed soak up the show , it does make for a scattershot interaction with it .

Some multitude might watch it all on the first day , others a month after . Some might talk about one episode , others about another . It ’s a messy way of building a pursual .

Like with Lost or Game of Thrones , watchers were on equal footing and could talk about the show every workweek . You ’d sustain that aid over calendar month – the bust - watching culture does n’t support that . It evaporate too quickly .

kaos

And it does n’t offer much confidence in Netflix , either from viewers or creators . It reduces the variety of shows on the service ( hits demand standardized follow - ups ) and puts press on creators to create show that are a success straight away , even though there ’s no way anyone could be certain of what does and does not make something a smash .

Netflix ’s short - term glide path could leave its fate up to the gods , and you eff how volatile they can be .
