OPINION : It ’s been abusy week at CES , with more announcements than I was wait leading up to the tech showcase . A few week ago , I was think perhaps CES might be on the wane , but while CES 2024 is n’t quite back to peak levels of attendees , it is getting back to throw the same wow factor .
The one trend that most have cull up on is the use of artificial intelligence information . Where this column is most concerned is with the use of AI in TVs to drive performance . It ’s become more predominant , and I ’m not sure that ’s always a good matter .
There are ways in which I think AI is necessary . moot Samsung ’s approach shot with its upcoming8 K TVs . The company has doubled down on using artificial intelligence with its NQ8 AI Gen 3 C.P.U. , apply it to apparent movement processing and upscaling of cognitive content .
This includes being able to use AI to count on out the geometry of people ’ case on sieve , or any object in the frame , and clear it up , heighten it , and reduce noise to get lower caliber resolutions closer to 8K. In this sense , it ’s a tool to extract better picture quality .
LG would say the same matter about its modish AI way but so far , I ’m less convinced by it , especially when it appears less inviolable in respecting the creative intent .
Take LG ’s latest α ( Alpha ) 11 AI processor . It ’s able to figure out above the DRM onNetflix , Disney+ , or any other streaming service of process you care to think of . I have n’t seen it in action , and this is only possible with the AI Picture Pro mode switched on ( so you have a say in this matter ) but it leaves me a little confused about what the purport is .
For example , the AI Director Processing on LG ’s telly with the α ( Alpha ) 11 AI processor can “ analyse the director ’s designed vividness tone and enhance the color expression ” .
That sentence uses the words ‘ intentional ’ and ‘ heighten ’ but they seem in opposition .
LG says this feature film understands the color science of filmmaking and line up it for greater impact but is that say the purple jacket crown the Joker wears in The Dark Knight is n’t quite as purple as one would care , so it take to be made more purpleness ? Or peradventure the intense contrast of colour in a Michael Bay film could be evenmoreintense ? And would this enhancement suggest that the normal picture modes are less interesting or flavourful by equivalence ?
At least you’re able to grow it off , and there isFilmmaker modefor picture accuracy , but it ’s an addition that feel like integrate AI for the sake of it . A ground to jazz up the mental picture that ’s center - catching to an end user who desire prettier pictures , but not the use of AI in keep with the originative intent . If a shade of orange is have in mind to be that way , why raise it ?
It seems to take away from the philosophy of good ol’ picture tuning . Sony ’s TVs are all about honour the Almighty ’s intention , to the point where Standard mode for its latest TVs is closer to repeat what a film or TV programme would look like on a master reminder . Similarly , Panasonic’sOLED TVshave been colour tuned in collaboration with Stefan Sonnenfeld , the eminent colourist for Hollywood cinema , having worked on Top Gun : Maverick , Gran Turismo , Tokyo Vice , Nightmare Alley and many other film and TV production over the years .
These coming bring credibleness to respecting the Godhead ’s purport rather than trying to add pinch where none are needed . I think there ’s a feeling from telly firebrand like LG and Philips that while they ’ll honor the Godhead ’s intent with dedicated Filmmaker modes , they ’d also opt more razzmatazz in other picture modes because it differentiates them from other TV brands . It ’s rightful to say that if everyone did the same affair , picture timbre would n’t be that interesting , but AI sweetening of the originative aim seems an unnecessary manoeuvre to me .
Panasonic is not against the use of AI in its processor , but the way it is utilised is relatively modest - keystone – a case of using it to recognise what you ’re watching and switching the preferences to suit . Roku ’s US TVswill feature a similar setting . That ’s ultimately not drive the picture quality you end up seeing on projection screen but interchange television set modes so you do n’t have to .
For me , these are the type of solutions I ’d care to see with artificial intelligence – reducing the rough-and-tumble and automate processes that take away from love your new TV . If not integrated efficiently , AI could terminate up taking centre stage when really it ’s meant to be a supporting actor .
