So the opinion has passed , and the EU show no signs of budging from its late position . The Energy Efficiency Index ( EEI ) coming into force March 2023 is going to make living difficult for 8 K TVs and some 4 K TVs , but not unsufferable .

There is no motivation for an alarmist approach ( well , not just yet ) but asreported by Business Korea , “ Korea ’s exports of 8 chiliad television set to Europe are extremely potential to be blocked ” as the EU maintains their unyielding posture on energy efficiency .

While we are the midst of a climate and energy crisis that ’s more than enough justification to take action at law on curbing energy use , the potential block of 8 green TVs being sell in Europe does seem , well , a short rough considering that the EU is applying the same zip purpose metric across Full HD , 4 K and 8 K television receiver . 8 K was previously exempt from the prior free energy rule enforced in 2019 and to consider those TVs as the “ same ” is to assume they ’re achieving the same destination .

I ’m certain some will say that this could take to innovation on the energy front , but I distrust television set manufacturers will be greeting this news by travail their collective molar some more .

It ’s not yet known whether this will have any gist on the UK TV mart in the wake of Brexit , but it would be strange to see implication of 8 K TV banned across Europe if that is indeed the result . As I wrote earlier in the year when theconsequences of the EU rulingfirst emerged , not only would this bear on any young telecasting on the marketplace , but it ’d also bear upon any current video still be sell . Once they ’re run low , that ’s it , you wo n’t find TVs such as LG’sOLED Z2andSamsung ’s QN900Bbeing restock at retailers .

LG appear confident that it will still be capable to meet the incoming standards , and while Samsung , Sony and TCL have n’t comment ( as far as I can tell ) , I ’d assume that they ’ve all had thoughts on how to adhere to the unexampled standards . The EU Commission seemingly does n’t believe that this opinion would force 8 K TVs to disappear from the market either . A newssheet on the8 K Association websitesuggests a few workarounds that telecasting manufacturer can enable , but much like the author of that piece mentioned , you ’d have to inquire if some of the result spotlight would not cause the EU to rethink its policies again .

I ’d also be keen to see what other stakeholders feel . Samsung and the 8 K Association have been push 8 K for several years , believe the format is on a similar trajectory as 4 cat valium in terms of grocery intensity . But what about the companies making capacity in 8 K , those produce 8 kB cameras to capture it and the product menage where content is put together ? It ’s great that Samsung want to agitate frontward on the universe of 8 K mental object by enabling its Galaxy smartphones to shoot at the solvent , but I have no interest in watch a video recording I shot at the Mungo Park on my TV , give thanks you very much .

But we’restillnot much closer to watching aboriginal 8 K content on displays – videos of animals and cities that are effectively slideshows on YouTube do n’t count in my popular opinion – and while BT Sports has been making strides in bringing 8 K streaming to people ’s homes , the service is n’t just swinge and dance about each milepost . The last one in the beginning this year of a rugby air in 8 K just made a ripple .

I feel as if I ’m replicate many of the same pointsI’ve made in old years , which shows how slow the progress of 8 K has been . Each year I wonder whether this will be the year that 8 kB makes it , and each year is a relatively underwhelming one . It appear as ifOLED technologyis stealing much of the calcium light as it becomes more low-priced , leaving 8 thousand as not even a lowly or perhaps even a tertiary thought among people looking to corrupt a new goggle box . It ’s still expensive , there is very little content , and I sense enthusiasm is waning a little .

So here we are again . Another yr approaches on the same 8 K merry go - round except it ’s birl much slower than it did before . As the EU opinion affects some 4 one thousand telecasting too , it ’ll be interesting to see whether brand treat the situation at CES . Lots of hoi polloi have written about 8 jet ’s want of actuation in the market over the preceding few years , but 2023 does feel like a year where it could be make or break for the technology go away forrard .
