Introduction
It ’s been over 36 years since Monitor Audio introduced its first Gold series of loudspeakers , which is more than enough clip for applied science – even in the creation of passive speakers – to have moved on more than somewhat .
Each subsequent generation of Gold has moved with the times , of course of instruction – but here in 2024 , the sixth genesis of the series make up nothing less than a complete rethink .
If you calculate the centre channel and the on - wall Gold models ( and why would n’t you ? ) then this sixth generation serial publication is an appropriate six theoretical account strong . We have to start somewhere , though – and so it ’s the prominent of the standmounters , the Gold 100 6 G , that ’s getting the Trusted Reviews treatment here .

Availability
The Monitor Audio Gold 6 G compass of loudspeakers has been on sales event since 15th August 2024 – the Gold 100 6 G standmounter I ’m reviewing here be £ 3000 per pair in the United Kingdom . In the United States it sells for $ 4000 , and although no Australian pricing has been confirmed as yet , a price of AU$6000 or so seems likely .
This is right money for a relatively little span of speakers , no doubt – but it ’s not as if the Gold 100 6 guanine are in a blank space all by themselves . Everyone from Bowers & Wilkins and KEF to Neat and Pro - Ac has an alternative with which to lure you … and I have n’t even mentioned brand from outside the UK yet …
Design
The Gold 100 6 GB is on the hefty side for a standmounting speaker system by today ’s compact and discreet standards – at 448 x 230 x 367 mm ( HWD ) it ’s quite an assertive front , and it ’s most by all odds a standmounter rather than a bookshelf speaker .
And to be honest , it ’s nothing much to attend at – at least as far as the cabinet go . It ’s an older - school box seat of mostly parallel sides , with only the mid - pod enclosure breaking the tyranny of the straight boundary . It contains the tweeter and midrange drivers that are discuss later in this review , and it ’s positioned high up the cabinet of the 100 6 constant of gravitation for square acoustic reasons – but it also constitutes a design tucket .
A strip show of die - spue aluminium seems to flow from the top of the baffle of the enclosing along most of the top of the cabinet . Apart from a little stylized ‘ mebibyte ’ at the bottom of the font of the loudspeaker , this airstrip of metal carries the only branding .
But while they might not be the most visually exciting speaker around ( and are even less so if you settle to overlay the number one wood array with the couple of magnetic grille that each speaker comes supplied with ) , they ’re certainly not plant wanting when it comes to the standard of build and close .
The build tone is basically faultless , and the choice of finishes – mellow - gloss blackamoor , the satin white of my revaluation sample , or Macassar humankind - made Grant Wood veneer – is the right way contemporary and decorative . The use of bolt of lightning - through engineering means there are no ass - heads or any other uglies visible , which only raise the stamp of expert construction .
Specification
Where features are interest , Monitor Audio has push the boat out far further than it has with design . This sixth generation of the Gold range basically start again from scratch – and the company has introduced some intriguing new technologies .
The Gold 100 6 G is a three - way of life design . The top of the front of the speaker is reside by the mid - pod steel natural enclosure that contains a high - frequence transducer and midrange driver behind a die - cast aluminium baffle board . Beneath there is a big bass driver , which is supplemented by a can - firing bass reflex action larboard . Each of these driver , it ’s sightly to say , abide close scrutiny .
For starters , the mellow - relative frequency unit is the latest interpretation of Monitor Audio ’s MPD III design and is strongly regulate by the transducer used in both the companionship ’s high - ending Pt range and the much higher - end Hyphn flagship speaker system .
This micro - pleated diaphragm excogitation offers singular high-pitched - end extension ( up to a giddy 60Hz , consort to Monitor Audio ) , and its straight radiating region check equal answer in both the horizontal and vertical planes – which should , in turn , offer up more convincing soundstaging . This is augmented by a carefully designed wave guide up front , and a rearward surface area of optimised intensity in fiat to minimise rippling in the audible frequency compass .
The 76 millimeter midrange driver and the 203 millimeter bass driver beneath it are both mark - new designs , and pull on more than four tenner of Monitor Audio ’s good - compulsion with metal drivers . The new metal cones that are on display here are based on the C - CAM ( ceramic - coated aluminium magnesium ) material Monitor Audio has been refining since the early 90s , and are call HDT ( or Hexagonal Diaphragm Technology to the likes of you and I ) .
HDT build on the RDT III ( Rigid Diaphragm Technology ) Nomex / aluminum / carbon fibre cones feature in the Platinum and Hyphn loudspeakers , and adds a stamp hexagonal convention to disrupt the breakup characteristics inherent in a harmonious cone design . The overall musical arrangement fork over what Monitor Audio reckons is the strongest , most Walter Piston - similar strobile it ’s ever developed . Add in unexampled spider design , unexampled driver environ , increased representative - coil lengths and bigger , more powerful motor scheme , and the overhaul is complete .
crosswalk fall out at 700Hz and 2.6kHz , and Monitor Audio has had a predictably long and hard think about the crossover connection that ’s fitted here . Improvements in the quality of capacitors , allied to hundreds of hours of pre - production listening , as resulted in crossovers that , the company tell , are a match for alternative designs be three time the price of the Gold 100 6G.
The derriere of the cabinet features a ample HiVE II sea bass reflex larboard that ’s tuned to 38Hz . It baby-sit above four respectable verbaliser cable television attach Post that allow for stripped telegram , spade or banana tree connection and make biwiring or even biamping potential .
Sound Quality
If some owners end up front like their dogs , then some speaker unit sound on the nose as they look . But in the grammatical case of the Monitor Audio Gold 100 6 G , that ’s only partially true .
Certainly they vocalise as large as they expect . The soundstage they are capable of generating when playing anything from Fairport Convention ’s Autopsy to LesAplx by Floating Points is wide and thick , and is complete with a proper signified of space and scale . They organise the layout well , and there ’s elbow - room in even the most complex recordings .
They ’re no blunt instrument , though , despite their physical and transonic size and scale . point levels are gamy at every microscope stage , and the level of mastery they maintain over low-toned frequency in particulate matter signify that rhythm are expressed confidently . The amount of straightforward lick and repel they can summon is nicely balanced by the amount of fine particular regarding tint and grain that ’s available , and no transonic event is too fleeting or too deep in a mix to dodge them . Fast - move basslines present no problems , and even complicated patterns are described with assurance .
The top of the frequency image is equally expressive , and that dedicated 76 millimetre driver allows the midrange to be delivered with real eloquence and brainstorm . Voices sound direct and unambiguous , and there ’s plenty of information discover regarding technique and emotional state – and all in the most uncomplicatedly direct mode .
Despite the relatively complex nature of the Gold 100 6 GiB , the frequency reply is smooth and even – crossover voter point are not remotely conspicuous . Overall key is ultimately on the slenderly coolheaded side of neutral , but this is a trait rather than an obvious defect – system - matching should not be a particularly time - wipe out or complicated cognitive process .
The overall position of the Gold 100 6 G is reasonably sedate – even the most raucous recordings ca n’t goad them into losing calmness , and they ’re a check , authoritative listen in all circumstances . That ’s not to say they miss excitement , though – they ’re more than glad to prioritise amusement over introspection .
In fact , about the only means in which they come up fractionally unretentive ( or , more correctly , lack complete command over the music they ’re represent ) interest dynamical drift – and it ’s not as if they ’re catastrophically lacking in this regard either .
But despite the form of insight that means pocket-sized dynamic variation in harmonic are name and contextualised with a kind of unfussy confidence , the spacious dynamical variations that a massed symphony orchestra , say , can indulge in do n’t get quite the sort of emphasis they expect . The Monitor Audio sound full-grown and strong to start with , so when a recording really ramps up the intensity level and/or volume , they do n’t manage to trip quite as far as is utterly ideal .
This is far from a fateful flaw , of course – but hold standards at this sorting of cost are sky high , and even the most small-scale defect requires highlight . Minor is what it is , though – in every other respect , the Gold 100 6 G are right on the money .

Should you buy it?
The brainwave into , and control over , your favourite recordings is unmistakable when they ’re heard through these speaker system .
Some competing designs pass off a little more deeply where kinetics are concerned , and can put even greater space between smooth and loudest .
Final Thoughts
The strong-arm size of the Monitor Audio Gold 100 6 gee may not be specially in vogue powerful now , but it will be a sad sidereal day when the sorting of auditory sensation they make falls from style …
