It’s not OLED, but the screen is great
When the Switch 2 was unveil , I was let down Nintendo had moved away from the OLED screen techit used on theNintendo Switch OLED . The calibre of the gore used here far outperforms the more or less dour LCD used on the original Switch . The new eight - inch version is more colorful , far more detailed thanks to the bump up to 1080p and more immersive due to the larger size . It also hasVRR , so it can up the skeletal frame rate when required
During my clip playing , I was immersed enough to the point where I stop thinking about the Switch OLED . All the improvements do aid , and make a screen that should please most people .
My only genuine unfavorable judgment is that while HDR is back up , I have yet to see an LCD panel of this size of it manage to successfully utilise it . I ’ll need longer with the Switch 2 to see whether or not that ’s the fount here .

The bigger size is more of a bonus than a negative
Along with the want of OLED , my other bighearted concern going into my Switch 2 demo was the increased size of the thing . With the concealment now being almost eight inch , I was worried it would no longer be a portable console , instead something I would only feel well-off playacting at home .
I have a similar takings with theSteam Deck OLED . Valve ’s portable PC has a 7.4 - inch screen , but the console itself is just so heavy that I feel incredibly self - witting using it out of the house .
I need n’t have worried .
The console is , of course , bigger – you may see the dimensions below – but as the thickness has fundamentally stayed the same , it does n’t feel noticeably with child in use .
The economic consumption of charge card in the build save the weight down and it ’s incredibly well balanced , with no particular part feeling enceinte . Nintendo knows how to build a handheld that feels great to hold , and the Switch 2 retain that .
I wish I hadn’t played Tears of the Kingdom on the original Switch
I played a bunch of games during my sentence with the Switch 2 . Mario Kart World will be an incredible hit , and it feel like a generational leap thanks to vivid visuals and interesting twists on the well - wear gameplay loop .
Donkey Kong Bonanza perhaps is n’t for me , but it look and play very well , and there are plenty of third - party claim likeCyberpunk 2077 , Hogwarts Legacy and Split Fiction that finally feel playable on a Nintendo Console , but the title that stand out most for me was The Legend of Zelda : tear of the Kingdom – a plot that ’s been out closely two years and one I have already put many hour into .
I relish my sentence with the new Switch 2 Edition of the game so much that I like I was come into it fresh and had never playact it before .
There ’s no doubt that this is the true way to get the biz . In handheld mode , it feels like the stabilisers have been move out , and the biz can be what it always want to be . The Joy-Con mouse controls are more than a gimmick

Of course , this is Nintendo and there are still some new additions that could either end up being generation - defining or forgotten about within a few months . The far-out optional camera is one , and the increase of mouse controls in theJoy - Con 2is another .
I did n’t use the tv camera during my day with the Switch 2 , but I did have a few demonstration of the updated skills of the controllers and my first stamp are extremely positive . Yet , it ’s still very much a Switch – and it ’s still very much Nintendo . There ’s no exposed metal , no dull industrial plan and no sharp edges . The design is just a vehicle to get into the plot .
It’s looking like it’s worth the price, even if questions remain
Even though I spent nearly a full Clarence Shepard Day Jr. with the Swirch 2 , I have many more questions I ’ll want answered during the brushup process .
Battery lifespan , of course , is very much an unknown aside from the undefined 2 - 6 hr claims . The general UI remains mostly a mystery , as do questions surrounding randomness and heat .
What I took most aside from my session was that I think the price is fair – even if it dwarfs former consoles . The £ 395/$449 RRP is a lot , but the improvements are rich , and many of the criticism level at the original Switch have been secure . Those were never going to occur cheap , specially in 2025 .
