OPINION : Google is leading the way when it come to AI - powered features on smartphones , with the newPixel 8and Pixel 8 Pro flaunting numerous eye - popping powers that seemingly work like magic .

I ’m frantic about the time to come of AI in consumer convenience , and receive the Pixel 8 ’s powers to notice spam birdcall and reduce irritating background noise during a call .

Best of all , Google is using its AI acquirement to allow average people like me to make stunning exposure . But following a demo of the Pixel 8 ’s Modern feature , I am starting to get uncomfortable with the extent that AI is capable to change your snaps .

Best Take is a new feature article for Pixel 8 phones that admit you to change the facial expression of a somebody in a photograph . Google used an example of someone pulling a face in a group pic , and then editing the photograph to make it search like they were smile instead .

Google indicate it ’s a dandy feature for making sure you could capture a perfect group photo where everyone is smiling at the same fourth dimension , but I ’m in person not a fan of using editing tools to rewrite the past times .

It ’s important to note that the Pixel 8 does take a second photo to take your preferred facial expression from – it ca n’t make a smiling mental image of you from scratch . But I revere that this could be too easy manipulated . If there was an function where I was feeling overturned on a finical day , I would n’t be very happy if friend or family were able-bodied to modify my font just for the sake of a more aesthetically pleasing photo .

Many will fence that the buck has already go off , as many people have been using Photoshop to alter photos for years now . However , you often need to be fair skilled to make an edit without clear blabbermouth . I ’ve seen plenteousness of effigy that have obviously been doctored . With Google ’s Best Take feature film , the average person will be capable to make the tweaks that are ostensibly indiscernible in the last ikon .

I personally think that editing an double in this way of life shoot down the purpose of taking a photo in the first place . Photos are priceless for capturing a specific minute in time , helping me to jog my storage . Maybe I have a red wine stain on my shirt that perfectionist will be keen to erase , but I ’d argue that imperfections such as this make photos all the more authentic and pleasurable .

I also throb at the mentation that my grandchildren could one daylight be looking at an AI - edited photo of me and wondering whether or not that grin is genuine . I ’m sure they would n’t be too fussed whether I ’m lour or pouting – they ’d just desire to see the real me , verruca and all .

That ’s not to say I ’m against AI being used in picture taking at all . I eff the idea of being capable to unblur a photo , improve the clarity or even soar up into an image for corking detail . In my opinion , AI should only be used to help novice snappers take fantastic picture , and not to rewrite history for the sake of perfection .   Otherwise , photos will become just as undependable as my deteriorating memory .
