Introduction
Nikon launched the full frame Nikon Z7 II alongside the virtually identical Nikon Z6 II back in 2020 .
The Z7 II is the successor to theNikon Z7and one of two middle child in Nikon ’s mirrorless Z line - up , sit down just below the flagship ( and significantly more expensive)Nikon Z9 .
The camera shares its looking with the cheaper Z6 II but pack a 45.7 - megapixel detector that lay it a track above the Z6 II in terms of image resolution .
I had the chance to try the Z7 II out myself at the ‘ Nikon is the Future ’ event this March . Keep read to learn more about my experience with the photographic camera .
Design and display
Despite packing a with child full frame sensor , the Nikon Z7 II has a relatively slender and lightweight eubstance . It is n’t quite as compendious as theNikon Z30 , but it ’s significantly smaller and easier to hold in one manus than the healthy Z9 .
The camera could also easy be mistaken for the Z6 II in a line up .
The Z7 II has a tough atomic number 12 - alloy torso that is to the full varnish against junk , dirt and moisture . And while it does n’t have two grip like the Z9 , it does n’t really need one with the undivided grip deep enough to offer good support for most lens whether you ’re shooting in landscape or portrait .
There ’s a effective mix of physical controls and touch controls on the CRT screen . This include a dial for run between shooting modal value , a video shift , AF - on , ISO and exposure compensation buttons and a joystick for adjusting the focus field .
I find the controls to be very easy to navigate after spending some time with the tv camera and the layout experience less overpowering than that on the Z9 , particularly when you first get your hands on the camera .
The Z7 II has a 3690K - dot OLED electronic finder , a shining 3.2 - inch LCD touchscreen that can tilt up and down but does n’t flip out to the side , cook it less practical for vloggers . There ’s also a third , greyscale screen door on top of the camera that offers a quick glance of your options .
As far as ports go , there ’s aUSB - Cport for shoot subject of providing never-ending ability on foresighted shoots or when create time lapses . The photographic camera also has an HDMI output and 3.5 millimetre jacks for headphones and microphones .
The camera has a dual lineup slot – one for SD cards and another for XQD and CFexpress card .
Image quality and performance
The defining feature on the Nikon Z7 II is its high - firmness of purpose 45.7 - megapixel full frame detector . This is the same size image sensor find in the flagship Z9 . However , the Z9 ’s sensor is stacked whereas the Z7 II ’s is not , meaning it does n’t take advantage of the same fastness .
The Z7 II is powered by two Expeed processor , which Nikon claims offers greater dynamic range and cleaner performance across the 64 - 25600 ISO compass .
The television camera includes a hybrid autofocus system of rules with subject tracking and almost twice as many centering points set up on the Z6 II . I did n’t get the opportunity to try out the Animal - Detection AF during the event , but I did get slew of fourth dimension to utilize the Eye - Detection AF and find it to be ready and accurate even with faster moving subject .
The camera can shoot at up to 10fps , allowing you to capture up to 200 full - re JPGs or 77 RAW images in a individual burst .
I found photos shot with this photographic camera to be crisp , clear and packed with detail . The color appeared vibrant and the Z7 II did an excellent job of capturing grain and detail in skin , hair and fabrics when shooting portrayal .
As far as video goes , there ’s support for 4K/60fps recording , though I did n’t get an opportunity to try out this out properly at the outcome , so you ’ll have to waitress for our full review for our final verdict on video .
