judgement : Apple ’s been on a rolling wave with updating many of its Mac merchandise since the start of 2023 , with the MacBook Pro and Mac Mini picking up celebrated spec bump for the new class .
TheMacBook Pro 2023 – which I am presently putting through its paces as I typewrite this – pick up new connectivity choice along with M2 Max and M2 Pro chips . TheMac Minialso picked up the M2 Pro microchip and a bum M2 base reading that feel like the ultimate student desktop information processing system .
lend those upgrades to a stemma - up that let in the fantasticMacBook Air M2and the powerful Mac Studio and you ’ve got a strong Mac suggestion . There is an outlier though , and I am not utter about the Intel Mac Pro .
It ’s the iMac that ’s buzz off me a little confused recently . For me , the iMac is up there with the iPhone and iPod as one of Apple ’s most iconic product . Some of my earliest technical school memory are of using those colorful iMacs at school or playing The Sims on an iMac at home , and they remain my preferred background all - in - one machine .
When Apple rethought the iMac in 2021 with an injection of color and sport that had been missing for a decade or more , I thought it would be a young start for the serial . I greatly enjoyed my time with theM1 iMac 24 - column inch , finding it to be the perfect choice for a family or a small flat that did n’t have space for an eyesore of a machine .
It experience criticism from some , notably for the limited movement of the display and the snowy bezels – but I feel these missed the target audience of the machine .
We ’re now a few years on from that dramatic refresh and , well , that same machine remains on sale on Apple ’s site for the same terms . The same M1 microprocessor chip sit inwardly and there ’s no choice for a large screen or a more powerful chance variable .
Do n’t get me incorrect , the M1 chipset stay on very capable – but I find it a little intemperately to recommend that someone drop over £ 1000/$1000 on the iMac when the Mac Mini fare with a newer , more equal to M2 version for $ 599/£649 and the buyer can decide what sizing screen they want and which appurtenance they choose .
The Mac Mini also improves on the iMac by offering a higher - end , M2 Pro choice for those require more power . There have been iMac Pro model in the past tense and I do n’t see any reason why Apple could n’t offer a standardized choice for the iMac – yield less for something more canonic , or stamp up extra Johnny Cash for a more brawny machine .
Therehave been rumour float around that Apple mightbe look until the M3 chip to promote the iMac , and that this might not be until late 2023 or 2024 , but this experience like a misstep when an M2 and M2 Pro iMac would make so much sentience .
