Apple set up new iterations of the MacBook Pro this week , with rise to theM2 ProandM2 Maxchips boosting the operation to new height .
While I did n’t gestate the new laptop computer to make it so early in the year , it ’s no shock to see Apple refreshing its MacBook Pro line since the last update was back in 2021 .
But I was surprised to see Apple scrub off any reference of theMacBook Pro M1 Pro / M1 Maxon its prescribed web site , removing the power to buy the slightly out-of-date laptop .
This is at odds with Apple ’s tactics with theMacBook Air . When the M2 form launch last class , Apple did n’t chuck the olderM1 model . In fact , both MacBook Air laptop are still available to grease one’s palms on the Apple website decently now .
It would look foreign if both the MacBook Air laptops were available at the same price , but there ’s a £ 250 difference . This way , Apple can cater to both those who want a cheap - as - possible MacBook and those who ’d prefer an ultra - portable computer with a flagship performance .
But if you want to buy a new 14 - inch or 16 - inch MacBook Pro from Apple ’s website , there ’s only the choice for the most late configurations .
This has create a far-famed unbalance in the MacBook range . If the £ 2149 asking price of a 14 - inch MacBook Pro is too expensive for you , then the next cheapest laptop that Apple offers is the13 - inch MacBook Proat £ 1349 , which is a monolithic Leontyne Price difference .
And while you may true hike up the toll of the 13 - inch MacBook Pro by upgrade the memory and repositing , you ’re still limited to theM2 chip , which is n’t really powerful enough for professional subject matter Maker .
Despite being a generation behind , theM1 Prois really a more powerful microchip than the M2 . That ’s because it ’s carry more CPU cores ( 10 alternatively of 8) and GPU cores ( 16 or else of 10 ) . As a result , it ’s a good option for professional craters than even a 13 - inch MacBook Pro with maxed - out glasses .
The M1 Pro feel of the 14 - inch MacBook Pro in the first place launched for £ 1899 . Knock £ 100 off due its age , and the more or less outdated MacBook would slot into the existing range of a function nicely . Apple would then have a better grasp of prices on fling , catering to a wider kitty of customers . It ’s a no - brainer from my linear perspective .
I do appreciate that Apple wo n’t need to get into a site where it ’s still selling products that launch over five days ago . But the MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip only launched in 2021 – there are far elderly devices being sold on Apple ’s online memory mighty now .
Plus , it ’s not untypical for Apple to sell outdated twist . Right now , you could grease one’s palms aniPhone 12,9th generation iPad , and2nd generation AirPods . So why is the MacBook Pro being treated differently ?
I also have to wonder what Apple does with its stock for the older MacBook Pro . At the outset of the week , you were able to buy a MacBook Pro with an M1 Pro chip from the stock . I do n’t believe all of that store has been sold within a matter of days .
With having such a big focus on sustainability , I imagine Apple is n’t chucking away remnant sampling . It ’s most likely sending these laptops off to third - party sellers , or perchance even reserving the parts for future repairs .
But I still sense that Apple is missing a trick by not selling the older MacBook Pro laptops on its website . And while there are plenty of third - party sellers offering the laptop , such as Amazon and Currys , removing the laptop from the official website does n’t exactly instill self-confidence that Apple is going to keep to bear the laptop computer for the long term .
So descend on Apple , stop forcing the latest configuration of the MacBook Pro upon us , and let us select our preferred contour . That way , everybody wins .
