Verdict
Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 2 occur in as the 19th instalment of the series . It ’s easy the well - look Call of Duty plot to date , and the graphics glow on my PS5 . The campaign mode is a little lacklustre , but there are heap of multiplayer modes to search , even if Infinity Ward has n’t ironed out all the carrying into action takings just yet .

Introduction
Activision takes us back to 2009 with a soft reboot of the original Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 2 story .
While the name Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 2 may be a little confusing to those who were playing the original game back in the 2000s , do n’t be fooled , this is game is not a remake . The 2022 expiration is a sequel to 2019’sModern Warfareand it have a nostalgic campaign alongside a plethora of multiplayer modes for players to dig their teeth into .
The massively enhanced graphics and modern retelling does make the biz worth recreate in its own right , however , Call of Duty ’s fear of stepping out of its solace zona shines through here more than ever .
Campaign mode
Just like its harbinger , Modern Warfare 2 follows Task Force 141 as they attempt to take down the Iranian Quds Force , with 17 missions in total to get through . Throughout the missionary post , I played as John “ Soap ” MacTavish and Kyle “ Gaz ” Garrick , and I have to say that it was fun to tread back into the shoe of role I last see to it over a decennary prior .
Unfortunately , after the nostalgia wore off I did find that this story felt a pile more control surface - level than the original Modern Warfare and its 2019 reboot . It can be difficult to care about the same stereotypical terrorist story that we ’ve ascertain so many times before , and characters rarely got any more geographic expedition than being fanatically enthusiastic about the war .
I do n’t think that Call of Duty need a particularly emotional narration for it to wreak , but it did feel like Infinity Ward was banking on my beloved of the first game to get me through the story beats in this one .
I can praise the level design however , which is massively help by the incredible graphics . The serious example of this would be the second mission plant in Amsterdam , which is fairly myopic and uninteresting on its own but the Dutch Washington is immediately placeable thanks to how incredibly realistic it looks , and for a moment it felt like I was walking around a simulator or else of fighting fancied terrorists .
I would argue that the graphics outshine the story and gameplay in a few areas , as in some levels I matte up more invested in go over out how much detail the developer managed to cram into every shot than how the story was work up .
Generally , I thought that every storey in Modern Warfare 2 was surprisingly scant , with one or two missions taking less than 10 mo to fill out . While I do n’t think anyone is asking for aBreath of the Wildlength campaign in a Call of Duty biz , every degree seemed incredibly linear , and it felt like I was drive to take after the situated path made for me rather than train new strategies for taking down enemies .
Call of tariff : Vanguardgave me more chance to take on a delegacy the elbow room I hear fit , with one of the protagonists , Lady Nightingale , having parkour - esque abilities which made explore the domain much easier . While many of the level in Modern Warfare 2 need to be scripted to succeed along with the tale , I felt as if I had less agency overall throughout the campaign .
There is one missionary work that packs a lot more tautness than any other , titled Alone . Here , you are abandoned with no weapons and must craft DIY tools to get past a plethora of guard . The emphasis on stealth demands your attending , and I really enjoyed create smoke bombs to confuse enemies and sneak on by , undetected . Being injured in this missionary work does coerce you to take the air at a laughably deadening tempo , but the amount of choice and creativity you ’re give permit it to beam nonetheless .
Other missions stand out too due to their variety ; the first mission set in Amsterdam took me to the epithelial duct , swimming around under the covering fire of darkness and take enemy out in cheeseparing - muteness . Recon by Fire was my favorite due to the multitude of way I could approach enemy , with the option of forcing them out into the open or sneakily crop them from the cap .
While I ca n’t say that the tier extract was bad , it felt more like a ‘ greatest hits ’ playlist of the original Modern Warfare II than its own consecrated game . Recon by Fire proved to me that Infinity Ward can be more creative in how it reserve players to approach a undertaking , and I mean more micro - decisions throughout the rest levels would have benefited the campaign overall .
I did like the weapon handling in this game ; each gun had its own weighting and find , and there were plentifulness of probability to find fault up and examine raw weapons in every level . Few mission actually favour a specific gun type – with Recon by Fire being the biggest outlier as it target a greater emphasis on sniping – which did make every gun palpate a little standardized , but never to the point where I stopped picking up new weapons from fallen enemy .
I do have to come to on one of the biggest and most unexpected issue I encountered during my playthrough . For reasons I do n’t understand , the crusade overheat my PS5 three times , forcing me to foreswear the game and hold back a duo of minute before I was comfortable playing it again . I have never experience this with any other game or practical app on my console table and there is nothing about my setup that I remember could have caused it .
From my inquiry , this does n’t seem like a common issue and my console still make for exquisitely , but it definitely did put me off devolve to the game , so it ’s something to keep in brain .
Overall , I think the campaign of Modern Warfare 2 is interesting but I would care to see Infinity Ward step further out of its comfort zone . While I ca n’t blame the art , I would like to see a unlike , less stereotypical history play out with a piffling more focus on exemption than the same analog design we ’ve been habituate to for so long .
Multiplayer mode
Overall , Modern Warfare 2 ’s multiplayer is on the dot what I expected it to be . Infinity Ward seems to have put a lot more focal point on 6v6 matches this sentence around , although that has n’t fall as a hurt to the mathematical function . Currently , there are 15 maps that span most of the biz modes , with my personal favourite being Sariff Bay , as it ’s bang-up for sniping .
I have n’t yet experienced a mapping that I hat , as most of them strike a safe balance between sizing and complexness . The option here find a destiny more wide-ranging than in former game I ’ve bring ; Crown Raceway is a Grand - Prix - inspire single-valued function where you may hide behind cars , and Taraq come in as a 6v6 or a massive 32v32 map , with tons of shoes to attack from .
Unlike my premature experience with Call of Duty , there are fewer places to camp out and hide , which encouraged me to bunk around the mapping a band more than I would usually . Movement here feels a lot more fluid ; while the jumping car-mechanic are not as powerful or dissolute as in previous games , it felt very smooth to go , jump out and glide around . I was a massive rooter of single-valued function that allow you to swim , as not only is it a fun way to escape another participant , it allow for creative and exciting takedowns .
It ’s deserving noting that there is no Zombie mode useable in Modern Warfare 2 , and Infinity Ward has claimed that this mode will not be returning at all this clock time around . As someone that has a lukewarm opinion of this modal value , this did not irritate me , but it ’s something to keep in mind if taking down the undead is high up on your Call of Duty wishlist .
All the Greco-Roman game modes that hard-core fans love have returned include Domination , Search and Destroy , Headquarters and Team Deathmatch . Out of the 12 mode , four are novel : Knock Out , Prisoner Rescue , Raids and Ground War Invasion .
Looking at what we already lie with , all the returning secret plan modes function as they should . My go - to has always been Team Deathmatch , but Search and Destroy has a particular place in my heart since you do n’t respawn if you accidentally get killed , adding a decent challenge to the mix .
Call of obligation : Modern Warfare 2 seems to have exact a leaf out ofBattlefield 2042‘s Scripture , with a few modes that take post on monolithic maps . The new Ground War Invasion mode is a 20v20 , pitting both human and AI players against each other . Despite my confutable FPS accomplishment , even I have to say that the AI here is almost comically big . The real player serve to make up the tenseness , but it feel almost unjust when you could gun down five AI players without breaking a sweat .
Ground War works in a very like way , at 32v32 , but with no AI players in sight . Due to the deficiency of AI , I much opt Ground War to Ground War Invasion , but I remember they ’re both worth playing if you ’re a sports fan of massive maps with mammoth do .
I was also a fan of Knock Out , a 6v6 mode in which both teams defend for a massive bag of cash located in the middle of the map . There are no respawns but you have the choice of reviving your team members , and you have to win five rounds in amount to bring home the bacon . I like fashion that enable team revivals , as I think it adds to the comradery of Call of Duty that is usually overlooked if you ’re playing in random teams .
Prisoner Rescue is another 6v6 and is essentially the same as VIP Escort fromCall of Duty : Black Ops Cold War , with the heading of rescuing or killing two captive instead of a random team member . foray is 3v3 and can only be unlocked after completing a certain challenge in multiplayer , giving more bonus for players to occur back for more and judge out raw strategies .
The gas customisation in Modern Warfare 2 is much more extensive than ever before , and I have to say , it ’s pretty overwhelming . If you ’re a Call of Duty superfan then this probably wo n’t take too long to get used to , but it ’s a flock to take in for an infrequent actor . I really like the fact that you may essentially make your own weapon , with options to sell features like rose hip - fire truth for a optical maser sight , and the option of adding up to five attachment uncommitted on each weapon .
However , the menu selection for this can be complicate , and it took me several equal to get to grips with all the options . Thankfully , I unlock new guns and raise almost every time I played , and the weapons that are restrict to challenges advance me to sample out weapons that I unremarkably would n’t take a 2d glance at .
Unfortunately , I have to mention how incredibly glitchy this plot can be . My experience is restricted to thePS5and thePS4 , and in both instance , there were some noticeable issues . Graphical issues , like floating bodies and shuddering walls do n’t rile me too much , but on social function my plot would suddenly freeze or the frame pace would neglect drastically , resulting in my death or just being boot out of the map completely .
On average , every third game I playact would have some type of performance outlet and it really did put me off playing . I do n’t think it had any coefficient of correlation to my cyberspace connection , as I found that other multiplayer secret plan on my PS5 performed without issue . From what I ’ve heard the same yield are prevalent on the PC version of the game too , so hopefully Infinity Ward can pluck out some patches to smooth out the experience .
Overall , I did bask Modern Warfare 2 ’s multiplayer modes , even as someone who does n’t on a regular basis act FPS games . Thanks to skill - free-base matchmaking – which is a tad controversial for more veteran player – I never felt like I was completely out of my depth during my first few play , and when the biz was work as intend , I superintend to have a lot of fun .

Should you buy it?
Modern Warfare 2 is a authentic title that offers up more multiplayer modes than before as well as a middling varied movement style . Playing on a next - gen cabinet or PC will also show off how graphically impressive this game truly is .
Despite the graphical art , multiplayer mode is teaming with performance problems that cause wrong deaths and can even drive you out of the lobby . This is also the only game I ’ve ever receive that has overheated my PS5 .
Final Thoughts
Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 2 does have its moment , although I would argue that a set of those are ride on the coattails of everyone ’s nostalgia . The cause is varied but a little too linear for my tastes , with the graphics taking centre stage thanks to the capability of next - multiplication console .
Multiplayer does have the chance to be slap-up , with added game modes and the fortune to combat it out on massive 32v32 maps , but Infinity Ward really needs to work on fixing the performance issues so it can reach its full potential .
